Accelerated Literacy & Numeracy Programme

Building the foundations for learning

ChallengeAid’s Accelerated Literacy & Numeracy Programme (ALP) helps children who have fallen behind in literacy and numeracy develop the foundational skills they need to succeed in mainstream education.

Following a successful pilot in 2024, the programme was expanded across our Schools of Hope network to address significant learning gaps affecting children in Kenya’s informal settlements.

Through targeted, competency-based learning, children are supported to develop essential reading, writing and numeracy skills, helping them build confidence and progress in their education.

Accelerating learning across Kenya

Working in partnership with Strathmore University, the Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI), Schools of Hope and local schools, ChallengeAid delivers learner assessments, structured learning camps and teacher training across informal schools, Schools of Hope learning centres and government primary schools throughout Kenya.

To date, more than 2,000 learners have completed the Accelerated Literacy Programme, with the initiative continuing to expand into new schools and communities.

Our 2025 Impact

During 2025, the programme reached hundreds of children across Kenya, helping learners develop essential skills and make measurable progress in literacy and numeracy.

Supporting teachers, strengthening schools

The programme is designed to create an impact beyond each individual learner.

Alongside supporting children, ChallengeAid provides teachers with training in accelerated learning approaches, equipping them with practical skills and methods they can continue to use in the classroom.

By strengthening teachers’ capacity, schools are better equipped to identify learning gaps and provide effective interventions long after the programme has ended.

Creating opportunities beyond the classroom

The impact of the programme extends beyond literacy and numeracy.

Accelerated learning has supported the reintegration of former street-connected children into formal education, helping them develop the foundational skills and confidence needed to return to the classroom.

Community literacy initiatives have also reached more than 1,400 adult learners, extending the benefits of education to families and communities.

Stronger foundations for the future

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, progress and reach their potential.

By equipping learners with core literacy and numeracy skills, ChallengeAid’s Accelerated Literacy & Numeracy Programme is helping thousands of children build stronger foundations for lifelong education and future opportunities.

The Accelerated Literacy & Numeracy Programme is just one of the ways ChallengeAid is helping to improve education and create opportunities for children and communities.
