Strengthening teaching in informal schools

ChallengeAid delivers In-Service Training (INSET) Days for teachers working in informal schools across Nairobi’s low-income communities.

Many children living in informal settlements attend community-run informal schools because there are too few government schools to meet demand. While these schools provide vital access to education, many teachers have had limited opportunities for formal training or continuing professional development. Large class sizes, limited teaching resources and few opportunities to share best practice can make delivering high-quality education challenging.

Our INSET programme provides practical, subject-based training designed to strengthen teachers’ knowledge, confidence and classroom practice.

How the programme works

The programme consists of up to six full-day training sessions delivered online by experienced teachers from Wales in partnership with ChallengeAid Africa.

Sessions are livestreamed to education centres in Nairobi, allowing teachers from multiple informal schools to take part together.

Training is delivered on weekends and other non-teaching days, ensuring teachers can access professional development without disrupting pupils’ learning.

Core learning programme

The programme focuses on five core curriculum subjects as well as learning techniques:

  • Mathematics
  • English

Each training day combines subject knowledge with practical classroom strategies that teachers can immediately apply in their own schools. Sessions include lesson planning, effective teaching techniques for large classes and low-cost approaches suitable for resource-limited learning environments.
